Please Divide in Groups of two or three @ KV — Verein für zeitgenössische Kunst

DE      Die Gruppenausstellung „Please divide in groups of two or three“ funktioniert als Plattform für Künstler*innen und Performer*innen, die sich in ihren Arbeiten mit Mechanismen des Ein- und Ausschlusses von Gemeinschaften beschäftigen. Ausgehend vom Modell des Kunstvereins wird der Begriff der Mitgliedschaft in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen, popkulturellen, digitalen und ökonomischen Zusammenhängen kritisch beleuchtet. Uns interessiert, welche bewussten und unbewussten Regeln, Codes, Sprachen, Symbole und Produkte Zugang zu gemeinschaftlichen Zusammenschlüssen bieten. Wie notwendig ist Gruppenzugehörigkeit als Bedingung des gesamtgesellschaftlichen Zusammenlebens? Inwieweit bringt das Ideal einer solidarischen Zugehörigkeit gleichzeitig auch immer Muster des Ausschlusses hervor?
     Leitmotiv der Ausstellung ist das von Simone C. Niquille und Anja Kaiser entwickelte Maskottchen, das als künstlerische und kommunikative Iden- tifikationsfigur die Besucher*innen des KV willkommen heißt.
     Die Performances, Workshops, Installationen, Screenings, Lecture Performances oder Exkursionen der Künstler*innen Tekla Aslanishvili, Ian Giles, Naomi Ricón Gallardo, Luise Schröder, Lissy Willberg und Frauke Zabel laden zu themenspezifischen Veranstaltungen während der Ausstellungszeit ein.
     Anlässlich der Ausstellung wird zudem die neue Vereinskollektion der Künstlerin Katrin Mayer eröffnet, das über die Ausstellungszeit hinaus bestehen bleibt.

EN      The group exhibition “Please divide in groups of two or three” is a platform for artists and performers that address mechanisms of in- and exclusion in and from communities in their works. Starting from the model of the Kunstverein, the notion of membership is critically examined in different societal, pop-cultural, digital and economical contexts. We are interested in asking which conscious and subconscious rules, codes, languages, symbols and products regulate access to forms of association and commonality. How essential is g roup affiliation as a condition for social coexistence in society at large? To which extent does the ideal of solidarity-based affiliation simultaneously always already imply patterns of exclusion?
     Welcoming the visitors of the KV as an artistic and communicative figure of identification is the mascot developed by Simone C. Niquille and Anja Kaiser.
     Over the period of the exhibition, the artists Tekla Aslanishvili, Ian Giles, Naomi Ricón Gallardo, Luise Schröder, Lissy Willberg and Frauke Zabel invite to theme-specific events in the form of performances, workshops, installations, screenings, lecture performances and excursions.
     Furthermore, the new clothing collection realized by the artist Katrin Mayer in response to the collective structures of the KV will be launched on the occassion of the exhibition and will remain active after the exhibition ends.

                                             AUSSTELLUNGSIDENTITÄT
     Anja Kaiser und Simone C. Niquille arbeiten an der Schnittstelle von Design, Kunst, Architektur und Wissenschaft. In ihrer ersten gemeinsamen Arbeit haben die Künstlerinnen als visuelles Erscheinungsbild ein Maskottchen für die Ausstellung entwickelt, das zu den Veranstaltungen und auf den Social Media Kanälen des KV aktiviert wird. Das Maskottchen wird dabei in seinen konträren Konnotationen – als identitätspolitisches Schlupfloch sowie als ökonomisches Werkzeug – eingesetzt und reflektiert. Als Mash-Up bekannter Comic-Charaktere dient es als vertraut befremdliche Projektionsfläche für Fragen nach Identifikationsprozessen und Gemeinschaftsbildung. Realisiert wurde das Maskottchen in Zusammenarbeit mit der Modedesignerin Alexandra Börner. Die Video-Arbeit wurde in Kooperation mit der Musikproduzentin Hazina konzipiert.

                                        UND WORKSHOP
     In einem installativen Setting wird Ian Giles seinen Film After BUTT präsentieren, der das soziale und kulturelle Erbe des legendären Schwulenmagazins BUTT erkundet. In einem Akt des generationsübergreifenden Geschichtenerzählens hinterfragt der Film die Ungleichgewichte von BUTT und wirft Fragen rund um den Umgang der Zeitschrift mit Herkunft und Geschlecht auf. Am 10.11. lädt der Künstler zudem zu einem offenen Gesprächsworkshop A Queer Magazine Viewing Party zu Identifikation, Verbreitung und Lesart der eigenen Sammlung queerer Magazine seit den 1970ern ein. Dazu sind zusätzlich die Leipziger Magazin-Liebhaber*innen Tina Kaden und zwei Vertreter*innen des Squeezie Queer Zinefest Leipzig eingeladen, ihre Sammlungen während der öffentlichen Veranstaltung vorzustellen.

                                        PARTIZIPATIVE INSTALLATION
     In ihren Performances untersucht Lissy Willberg Raum- und Gruppendynamiken anhand von partizipativen Angeboten, die sie in Form von Skulpturen und Sound für ortspezifische Konstellationen entwickelt und den Besucher*innen zur Verfügung stellt. Unter dem Titel Consider Me A Social Butterfly wird der KV im Zeitraum vom 18.-24.11.2019 und die dort befindliche Installation ausschließlich als Gruppe begehbar sein. Interessierte Gruppen konnten sich vorab als schon existierende oder temporär gegründete Gemeinschaft, für ein Nutzung des Raumes anmelden. Die Besucher*innen treffen dort auf diese Gruppen, die in der Ausstellung tagen.

                                        EXKURSION UND
                                        PERFORMATIVE ORTSBEGEHUNG
     Luise Schröder setzt sich mit der Fortschreibung historischer Mythen und deren Bedeutung für Identitäten und Gemeinschaften auseinander. Unter dem Titel Both sides of the border lädt sie zu einer Exkursion zum Skulpturenpark Deutsche Einheit ein. Dieser befindet sich auf dem Todesstreifen der ehemaligen Grenze zwischen BRD und DDR, am ehemaligen Grenzübergang Eußenhausen/Henneberg. Dort wird sie zusammen mit den Teilnehmer*innen eine geführte Ortsbegehung machen, die sich als ein performativer und kritischer Kommentar zu den gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Verhältnissen versteht und dabei ein Schlüsselereignis deutscher Geschichte in den Blick nimmt.

                                        LECTURE-SCREENING
     Tekla Aslanishvili untersucht in ihren umfangreichen Film- und Rechercheprojekten, wie digitale Technologien urbanes Leben und unseren Alltag beeinflussen. Im KV Leipzig wird sie im Gespräch Ausschnitte aus ihrer essayistischen Dokumentation Algorithmic Island (2019) zeigen, die die materiellen und sozialen Bedingungen des Infrastrukturprojektes Anaklia in Georgien untersucht, das im Zuge der Investitions- und Immobilienspekulationen um die Neue Seidenstraße von China nach Europa initiiert wurde. Mittels der Einbindung internationaler Forscher*innen positioniert sich der Film zu den Ereignissen und deutet mögliche Entwicklungsszenarien von fragilen Gemeinschaften aus einer Zukunftsperspektive an.

                                        RELEASE DER VEREINSKOLLEKTION
     Katrin Mayer wurde vom KV eingeladen, eine neue Setzung für den sozialen Ort der Bar des Vereins zu entwickeln. Im Rückschluss auf frühere Projekte, Textilien als Material identitätsstiftender Erinnerungskultur zu verstehen, hat sie die Strukturen des Kunstvereins, der als offenes Kollektiv zusammenarbeitet, analysiert und die Kollektion Social Fabrics für sie entwickelt. Die Kleidungsstücke können von Akteur*innen des KV während interner Sitzungen und öffentlicher Veranstaltungen getragen werden. Die vom aktuellen Team gestifteten Kleidungsstücke wurden dafür von ihr dekonstruiert und im Sinne der Mechanismen von Netzwerken transformiert. Das Projekt bleibt nach der Ausstellung weiterhin bestehen. Die Kollektion wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Alexandra Börner realisiert.

                                        PERFORMANCE
     Interessiert an Möglichkeiten der politischen Teilhabe und des Widerstands der Kunst arbeitet Frauke Zabel an einer fortlaufenden Recherche zur Theater- und Performancegeschichte Brasiliens. Im KV wird sie ihr aktuelles Reenactment-Projekt Widerstand – Aneignung, Übersetzung und Transfer. Ein Realitätstheater situationsspezifisch aufführen und neu kontextualisieren. Dabei wird ein Gespräch mit fünf aktivistischen Kulturproduzent*innen aus São Paulo über die Verhandlung lokalpolitischer Probleme wie Rechtspopulismus und Postkolonismus wiedergegeben. Gleichermaßen werden dabei die kulturellen Aneignungsprozesse und die Ohnmacht einer westlichen Kunstszene kritisch zur Diskussion gestellt.

     In ihren forschungsintensiven Projekten interessiert sich Naomi Ricón Gallardo für die Möglichkeit von Gegenkulturen innerhalb neokolonialer Systeme und Strukturen. Ihr Film Utopias Pirata (Or Bootleg Utopias) ist ein fiktionaler Film in Form eines Musik-Videos, der auf den Berichten von sechs Mitgliedern von JAR basiert - einem 1993 in Mexiko gegründeten aktivistischen Punk-Kollektiv. Der Film versucht, die künstlerische Umsetzung von Forschung und Repräsentation zu thematisieren, sowie Konsens und Dissens innerhalb scheinbar homogener Gruppen zu verhandeln. *Miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte 2019-2022 del Fondo Nacional para La Cultura y las Artes

                                             EXHIBITION IDENTITY
     Anja Kaiser and Simone C. Niquille work at the intersection of design, art, architecture and science. In their first collaborative work, the artists have developed a mascot as the visual identity of the exhibition, to be activated during the events as well as on the social media channels of the KV. The contrary connotations of the mascot as both a loophole for identity politics as well as a commercial prop are here put to use and reflected upon. As a mash-up of famous comic characters, it is both a familiar and alienating object of projection for questions concerning identification processes and community building. The mascot was realised in collaboration with the fashion designer Alexandra Börner. The video work was produced in cooperation with the music producer Hazina.

                                        AND WORKSHOP
     Installed within the gallery, Ian Giles presents his film After BUTT, exploring the social and cultural legacy of the legendary gay magazine BUTT. By means of a cross-generational storytelling, the film scrutinises the disparities of BUTT, raising questions about the way the magazine addressed aspects of social background and gender. Furthermore, the artist will co-lead an active workshop A Queer Magazine Viewing Party on 10th of November, this group discussion and magazine reading party will utilise Giles’ own collection of queer magazines, alongside the collections of fellow Leipzig based magazine enthusiasts Tina Kaden and two representatives of the Squeezie Queer Zinefest Leipzig – together we will talk about identification, distribution and image making across queer publishing from the 1970s to the present.

     In her performances, Lissy Willberg investigates spatial and group dynamics by means of participatory proposals. As site-specific constellations, developed in the form of sculptures and sound works, she puts these at the disposal of the visitors. Under the title Consider Me A Social Butterfly, the KV and the installation within the space will, during the timeframe of 18.-24.11.2019, only be accessible to groups. Interested groups could register in advance to use the space as an existing or temporarily established community. The visitors meet these groups in KV, who have their public meetings in the exhibition.

                                        EXCURSION AND
                                        PERFORMATIVE SITE VISIT
     Luise Schröder engages with the ever developing narration of historical myths and their implications for identities and communities. Under the title Both sides of the border, she invites to an excursion to the sculpture park Deutsche Einheit. The site is located along the death strip on the former border between FRG and GDR at the former border crossing Eußenhausen/Henneberg. Together with the participants, she will do a guided site visit that understands itself as a performative and critical commentary on contemporary societal conditions, focusing on a key event in German history.

                                        LECTURE SCREENING
     In her extensive film- and research projects, Tekla Aslanishvili investigates how digital technologies influence the urban environment and our everyday lives. At KV Leipzig, she will show and discuss excerpts of her essayistic documentary film Algorithmic Island (2019). The film addresses the material and social conditions of the infrastructural project Anaklia in Georgia that was initiated in the course of investment and real estate speculations surrounding the New Silk Road from China to Europe. By involving international researchers, the film positions itself in relation to the events and hints at potential development scenarios of fragile communities from the perspective of the future.

     Katrin Meyer was invited by the KV to develop a new setting for the bar of the association, understanding it as a social space. In reference to previous projects, in which she understood textile as material for identity-generating cultural memory, she analysed the structures of the Kunstverein, who operate as an open collective, and developed a new clothing collection, titled Social Fabrics, for the KV. The pieces of clothing can be worn by actors of the KV during internal meetings and public events. Garments donated by the current team have been deconstructed and retransformed by the artist according to the mechanisms of networks. The project will remain active after the exhibition. The collection was produced in collaboration with fashion designer Alexandra Börner and graphic designer Teresa Rudolf.

                                        PERFORMANCE
     Guided by her interest in possibilities of political participation and arts as a form of resistance, Frauke Zabel works on a continuing research project about the theatre- and performance history of Brazil. At KV she will perform a situation-specific version of her current reenactment project Widerstand – Aneignung, Übersetzung und Transfer. Ein Realitätstheater and contextualise it anew. The work reformulates a conversation between five activist cultural producers from São Paulo about the negotiation of local political problems such as right-wing populism and postcolonialism and equally critically discusses processes of cultural appropriation and the powerlessness of western art scenes.

     In her research-intensive projects, Naomi Ricón Gallardo is concerned with the potential of countercultural movements in neocolonial systems and structures. Her film Utopias Pirata (Or Bootleg Utopias) is a fictional film in the form of a music video based on the accounts of six members of JAR – an activist punk collective established in Mexico in 1993. The film seeks to address the artful fabrication of research and representation, as well as how consensus and dissensus are negotiated within seemingly homogenous groups.
